What Is Sealed Product?
Sealed product refers to any unopened TCG product: booster boxes, booster packs, Elite Trainer Boxes, bundles, and collector boxes. You don't know exactly what you'll get — that's part of the appeal.
What Are Singles?
Singles are individual cards purchased directly, usually at or near market price. You know exactly what you're getting and can target specific cards for your deck or collection.
When to Buy Sealed Product
- You love the experience — Opening packs is genuinely fun. If the thrill of the pull is part of why you play, sealed is worth it.
- You're building a collection broadly — Sealed gives you a wide spread of cards from a set, including commons and uncommons you might not think to buy as singles.
- You're investing — Sealed product from popular sets tends to appreciate over time, especially when it goes out of print.
- You want to draft or play sealed events — For Limited formats in MTG or Pokémon, you need packs.
When to Buy Singles
- You need specific cards for a deck — Buying singles is almost always cheaper than cracking packs to find what you need.
- You're on a budget — Singles let you maximize value by targeting exactly what you want.
- You're chasing a specific chase card — If you want one particular card, buying it directly saves time and money vs. gambling on packs.
The Math: Sealed vs. Singles
Let's say a chase card has a pull rate of 1 in 100 packs and costs $50 as a single. A booster pack costs $5, so you'd spend an average of $500 cracking packs to pull it. Buying the single directly saves you $450. The math almost always favors singles for targeted purchases.
That said, if you pull other valuable cards along the way, the effective cost of sealed drops. It's a gamble — and sometimes it pays off.
